This paper is about variational approaches to parameter estimation and prediction in an MRF.  In particular, they argue that, in the variational setting, an inconsistent estimator of $\theta$ can be desirable, because it can offset errors later in the prediction step.

Some points to examine:

• the overall procedure presented in Section 4.2.
• the application to Gaussian mixtures in Section 6.1
• the comparison of the tree-reweighted approach and sum-product in Section 7.
