M. J. Wainwright. Estimating the “wrong” graphical model: Benefits in the computation-limited setting. –

This paper is about variational approaches to parameter estimation and prediction in an MRF.  In particular, they argue that, in the variational setting, an inconsistent estimator of \theta can be desirable, because it can offset errors later in the prediction step.

Section 2,3 are covered in the Graphical Model survey.

Some points to examine:

  • the overall procedure presented in Section 4.2.
  • the application to Gaussian mixtures in Section 6.1
  • the comparison of the tree-reweighted approach and sum-product in Section 7.
