M. J. Wainwright. Estimating the “wrong” graphical model: Benefits in the computation-limited setting. – http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/~wainwrig/Papers/Wainwright06_JMLR.pdf

This paper is about variational approaches to parameter estimation and prediction in an MRF.  In particular, they argue that, in the variational setting, an inconsistent estimator of can be desirable, because it can offset errors later in the prediction step.

Section 2,3 are covered in the Graphical Model survey.
